About Us
About The Imperial Atlas Company
The Imperial Atlas Company was founded with a simple objective: to restore and present the finest examples of historic cartography to modern standards of craftsmanship.
We specialise in nineteenth and early twentieth century maps from the great age of exploration and empire works originally produced by Britain’s leading cartographic houses and preserved today in national archives and libraries.
Each map in our collection is selected deliberately. We do not operate as a catalogue warehouse. Every piece is chosen for its historical significance, visual composition and architectural presence.
Restoration & Scholarship
Our prints are derived from archival sources, including plates held by institutions such as the British Library. Each work undergoes conservation-grade digital restoration to remove age-related blemishes while preserving original linework, typography and tonal character.
The objective is not to modernise the map, but to reveal it as it was intended to be seen.
We retain the integrity of the original plate, including period cartographic conventions and decorative elements, ensuring historical authenticity remains intact.
Materials & Craftsmanship
All prints are produced on premium 250gsm textured fine art paper using archival pigment inks.
The textured matte surface lends subtle depth and tactility reminiscent of traditional printmaking, while archival inks ensure long-term display stability without yellowing or fading.
We avoid thin poster stock and high-gloss finishes. Our aim is to create prints suitable for studies, libraries and professional interiors pieces that feel substantial in both material and presence.
Each print is made to order and carefully inspected prior to dispatch.
Our Approach
We believe historic cartography should be presented with clarity, restraint and respect.
Our collection is intentionally limited. We prioritise curation over volume, quality over novelty, and permanence over trend.
The result is a body of work designed to sit comfortably in refined interiors from private studies and libraries to professional offices and heritage homes.
A Note on Heritage
The maps we restore were created in a particular historical context. They reflect the worldview and cartographic conventions of their time.
Our role is to preserve and present these works faithfully as historical artefacts, enabling collectors to appreciate their craftsmanship and significance within the broader story of global exploration.
